Many people believe that slavery ended with the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, but the sad truth is, slavery still occurs all over the world. In fact, 27 million slaves exist today, more than ever before in human history. And it is not just a problem in foreign countries. Slavery is here in the United States, in every state, and in most major cities and some small towns. 100,000 American kids are forced into the sex for sale industry each year in the US. This includes child porn, stripping, and prostitution. Slavery today is called human trafficking.
A lot of our American girls and some boys are being prostituted at truck stops and rest areas against their will. Whether they were runaways who got trapped in this life by a pimp, kidnapped off the streets, compelled by a family member or “boyfriend” to prostitute, they are victims of human trafficking. Anyone under 18 in the sex for sale industry is a victim of human trafficking. Anyone under pimp control, no matter what their age is a victim of human trafficking (TVPA---Trafficking Victims Protection Act).
Truckers Against Trafficking was created in March 2009 to combat the problem of modern day slavery by educating, empowering, equipping and mobilizing the trucking industry in the fight against this crime.
Truckers are the eyes and ears of our nation’s highways. We believe they can be heroes by simply keeping their eyes open for this problem and then making a call to the national hotline number 1-888-373-7888. TAT has created wallet cards with the national hotline number as well as a training video that is available for view on our website,

To date, the national hotline has received over 230 calls from truckers reporting human trafficking at truck stops and rest areas. The First Annual Truckers Media Convention hosted by Donna & Allen Smith was held on Oct. 15, 2011 at The Gold Strike Hotel in Tunica MS.
